Something for everyone!

ACC’s Community Education program provides short-term non-credit classes in a variety of topics.  Classes may be taken for enrichment, recreation, or to gain practical information.  If greater knowledge in a subject is desired, participants are encouraged to pursue a semester-long credit class at ACC.

COOKING CLASSES - HEART-WARMING FALL FARE

Chef Eric earned Chef Certification at the Western Culinary Institute and now owns the coolest restaurant in town, The Fresh Palate.  His hands-on instruction, casual personality, and innovative menus create fun, informative classes.  Bring your appetite; you’ll be learning, cooking, and eating!  Register for any or all of the classes. Come with a friend, but register early - attendance is limited.   Our fall cooking classes with Chef Eric Peterson are the result of requests for basic bread-making and traditional comfort-foods. 

 

10-55:  BREAD-MAKING FOR BEGINNERS, PART I

If you think good bread comes from the bakery, you need to experience the gastronomical superiority of quality and flavor in home-baked bread.  Making bread really isn’t difficult and it is so worthwhile!  We’ll prepare a simple, basic, white yeast-raised bread that can be used various ways.  Participants will learn about yeast and practice mixing, kneading, rising, baking and best of all -- eating!  A variety of condiment and spread options will be available and additional recipes provided.

10-56:  BREAD-MAKING FOR BEGINNERS, PART II

Artisan breads are crafted rather than mass-produced, with a variety of ingredients added to a basic yeast-bread dough.  In tonight’s class, participants will create two artisan breads, Parmesan Spinach Braid and Focaccia.  Participants will use their own Focaccia dough to create personalized pizzas with a choice of toppings.  Please bring a chef’s knife, place setting, and towel (apron optional).

10-57:  SOUPER FALL SUPPERS

Tonight we’ll create and enjoy a variety of wonderful soups and bread for meals that can be prepared in 30 minutes or less!  We’ll make Fresh Tomato Soup (like Campbell’s never dreamed), Chicken Santa Fe Soup, Tex-Mex Cheese Soup, and Black Bean Soup.  Additional recipes will also be included.  Our meal will be rounded out with home-baked bread.  Please bring a chef’s knife, place setting, and towel (apron optional).

Three timely programs with information and tools to help you resolve common situations that cause discourage workplace harmony and productivity.  Each session is a mini-professional workshop in an easy-going environment over a casual lunch (included).  Learn to create an enjoyable and rewarding environment at work and home!  Choose one session or all three and invest the time, now, to develop your leadership competencies!

 LANDLORD FUNDAMENTALS

10-61:  Landlording is a very attractive field with the potential for generating supplementary income.  A difficult selling market and low purchase prices are creating more landlords every day.  However, managing rentals may be difficult without an owner’s manual to consult.  This workshop provides indispensible information for those interested in real estate rental.  The course will help participants look at landlording in a structured way, spotlighting responsibilities through federal, state and local laws.  Methods of avoiding or reducing common problems will be shared.   Techniques for legally select tenants will be introduced and practiced in class.   Perspectives on tenant management will be introduced, discussed and evaluated.  You will not want to miss this opportunity!

Instructor Nancy Dashner’s nine years in Human Resources revealed an affinity for helping others through training and development of new skills.  A landlord of eleven years, she is currently pursuing a degree in Adult Education and Training.

 A HEALTHY BODY, MIND, AND SPIRIT

 10-62: YES, YOU CAN DANCE!

If you’re like many people, every time you attend a wedding or somewhere there’s dancing, you wonder what you look like on the dance floor.  Maybe you don’t even try to get on the floor and just say, “I don’t/can’t dance.”  Well, this class can help you get over your anxiety or reluctance and allow you to have as much fun as everyone else.  Come and discover the joy of dancing!  Dance instructor Vicki VanWagnen will demonstrate and teach some basic, easy to follow steps that will help you coordinate your two left feet!  We’ll learn some steps for slow and fast-dancing.  Partners are not necessary for this class, but you may come with a friend or partner, if you wish!

10-63:  MASSAGE FOR TWO!

Come with a friend or partner and participate in a fun class designed for two people to work together, learning simple relaxation techniques!  Massage is beneficial for relaxation, easing pain, improving circulation and skin health, exercising weak or tight muscles and reducing cramping.  Class will include a demonstration of Raindrop Therapy, a treatment designed to detoxify the body by the use of specific essential oils, which is also very good for back issues. 

Instructor Brittany Styma is a Certified Massage Therapist and graduate of Everest Institute.  She is trained in Basic Swedish massage, pregnancy massage, deep tissue, sports, Hot Stone Therapy and Raindrop Therapy.  Brittany is employed at Donovan’s Serenity and Wellness Salon and will be assisted by Sandra Donovan.

10-64: SELF-HYPNOSIS RELAXATION TECHNIQUES FOR HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Have you wondered how effective Self Hypnosis is for relaxation, stress management and health?  Discover how you can use this wonderful life tool to enhance your life.  This is a fun, information-packed course in which you will be hypnotized by Dr. Hoppe and learn techniques to do it on your own.  99.99 percent of people can be hypnotized.  Handouts with techniques and the history of hypnosis, as well as accomplishments and uses for this valuable tool, are included. 

Instructor Kathryn Hoppe is a retired dentist who has a desire to help others with personal growth and self-improvement.  Dr. Hoppe is a graduate of the University of Detroit School of Dentistry, the Clinical Hypnosis Institute, and a Reiki Master. She is one of few dentists who incorporated hypnosis in her practice so patients could benefit from a relaxed, comfortable visit and eliminate anesthetic, if desired.  She is now a part-time instructor at ACC in the Biology Department.

EXPLORE YOUR CREATIVITY!

 10-66:  RENEW YOUR LIVING SPACE!

Instructor Doug Nehring presents an enjoyable evening class packed with valuable information and tips on a wide variety of interior design topics.  We’ll explore color and neutrals that go “beyond beige;” discover ways to renovate without spending a lot; and learn how to make decisions about furniture or accessories purchases that will allow you to get the most from your money.  Statistics indicate that the average 25 year-old person will live in seven homes in their lifetime; others may be down-sizing; let’s learn to make smart choices in furnishings and decor that will last!  Participants are invited to look around their living spaces and come prepared to ask questions of an experienced and entertaining professional with years of education and experience.  There will be ample time for questions, answers, and discussion.

10-67:  DÉCOR BY YOU?  WHO KNEW?!

Do you have a spot in your house that needs a “little something”?  Fall is a perfect time to get creative, especially with Christmas just around the corner!  Come and learn to create your own arrangements and wreaths from things that catch your fancy out in the wild -- or in captivity!  We’ll use a wide variety of items for demonstration and encourage audience participation for hands-on learning and practice.  You’ll be ready and able to fearlessly create unique items for yourself and others, incorporating your own choices of materials as we move from season to season.  This class promises to be fun.

 Instructor Joan Misiak is a seasoned crafter and has produced arrangements for a variety of occasions, including weddings and parties, for years.

10-68:  DECORATE THE TREE-SHIRT!

Take a humble white sweatshirt from ho-hum to Ho-ho-ho!  Decorate your own festive shirt for the holidays with a beautifully ornamented, bejeweled Christmas tree with holiday items beneath it.  Using So-Soft Fabric Paint, your shirt will maintain wash-ability and comfortable wear-ability.  Instructor Barb Beem is an artist and retired teacher.  She will guide you and simplify techniques so you can create an item you’ll be proud to wear or give as a gift.  Learn methods and skills you can apply in many other ways.  NOTE: Please bring a plain white sweatshirt that you’ve pre-washed without fabric softener.  All other supplies are included in the fee.  Attendance is limited!

Making jewelry is creative and rewarding. Discover how easy it is to create pieces to complement fashions - or as gifts. Learn basic skills; add new styles and techniques. 10-69: POLYMER CLAY BEADS

Making clay beads is fun and easy even if you have little or no experience with this versatile material. We’ll learn techniques to create a variety of beads then use some to make a stretchy bracelet. Extra beads you make may be taken home to use in your own designs or you may bring them to include in pieces you make in the Beading 101 class.   Instructor Rita Wilberg was trained at William Holland School of Lapidary Arts and at the Galleria in Florida. She works with glass, stones and beads to create unique pieces. In addition to selling her jewelry at art fairs, Rita’s work is at Art in the Loft, Gallery 109, and Besser Museum.

10-71:  “ORPHAN-BEAD” NECKLACE

Using your choice of colors and styles of beads from a large selection, we’ll create a unique necklace with a selection of beads, head-pins, eye-pins, jump-rings, and split rings.  Though you can construct your piece uniformly and symmetrical, you may also make it as asymmetrical as you wish.  A variety of necklaces will be available as examples.  This versatile design is a favorite of instructor Kate Bruski

 10-73:  SCENTED BATH SALTS AND FELTED SOAP-SCRUBBY

Learn the art of felting, the easy, fun way!  For the first project of this class, we’ll create a felt covering for a bar of soap which forms a scrubby-bar that ever-so-gently cleans your skin.  Our second project is to create soothing, relaxing and detoxifying bath salts in your choice of natural essential oil scents including Jasmine, Fresh Orange, Lavender, and Cinnamon Apple.  Bath salts may be colored and layered in scents so you have multi scents and colors in a jar, making a beautiful and very inexpensive holiday gift.  Since you’ll make two, you have one for yourself!   IMPORTANT NOTE:  Please bring two fancy (or plain, if you prefer) glass jars with lids to hold your bath salts.  Add a label or note, and some ribbon and you have a lovely gift!

10-76:  GETTING CREATIVE WITH RESEARCH -- INTERROGATING THE DEAD!

The word “research” causes most people to envision hours in the library or spending hours on-line Googling -but there’s so much more to it - and should be! Originally created for writers, this program sheds creative light on what most consider drudgery. So if you have any type of project: a research paper, genealogy, tracking down information for work or fun, come, find new ways of getting what you need, and have fun doing it. We’ll look at research as a game, physical act, a perfectly natural act, and finally, we’ll raise it to the level of art

 10-77:  INSTANT PIANO FOR HOPELESSLY BUSY PEOPLE

You don’t need years of lessons to play piano!  You can learn enough in this enjoyable workshop to play almost any song on the piano, with two hands. Continue to perfect your skills at home using a home-study CD, included with the cost of the class. This is the system the pros use—chords, not tedious note-reading. 

Instructor Marc Doiron has a B.A. in music and has played piano professionally for over 15 years. He is versed in pop, rock, country, blues and jazz. The Instant Piano one-day chord workshop has been taken successfully by over 15,000 students across the US and Marc now brings this seminar to us.

Photos taken during class will be viewed and discussed as part of the learning process. NOTE: Ownership of a camera is highly recommended.

 10-88:  DIGITAL CAMERA BASICS AND MANAGING YOUR PHOTO FILES

Instructor:  Craig Brownridge

Learn common digital camera features, functions, and how to choose the right digital camera for your use. Learn how to import your pictures from your camera to computer and to print or share photos with common Windows programs. You do not need to own a camera to benefit from this class. A great class if you’d like to purchase a camera but don’t know what to get or - if you have a camera and realize you’re not sure what to do with all your photos!

This class is for individuals with working familiarity of their digital cameras.  Improve your photographs by gaining the ability to control your camera in various situations, learn how to take advantage of features available on your digital camera and some editing skills. This is a great class for summer!  Preserve memories from reunions, weddings, graduation parties and other summer events!  Consider the PhotoShop class to optimize your photos!

 10-90: PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS

Instructor: Tom Sherrill-Mix

A beginner's course in Adobe Photoshop covering basic image-editing techniques; learn to navigate the Photoshop window, use palette controls; archive techniques to preserve picture quality; resizing pictures to attach to e-mails. Prerequisite: Basic Computer Usage class or equivalent knowledge.  NOTE:  Consider combining the PhotoShop, Digital Photography and/or PowerPoint classes for skills that allow optimal use of your photos; perfect for manipulating and sharing photos on personal websites, emails, and items you are offering for sale.
