Program Description

Student Support Services: Mentoring For Student Success

The purpose of a mentoring program for incoming freshmen is to provide a foundation for student success that is based on the belief that underprepared students need close relationships with faculty, access to counseling, shared values and good relationships with other students, and specific career goals. The mentoring program will provide an opportunity for successful student role models to guide underprepared incoming freshmen on the right path towards meeting their needs as college students.

Goals

The Peer/Mentor program will:

  1. implement peer/mentor training that emphasizes "Building a Peer/Mentor Relationship," "Communication," "Qualities of a Mentor," "Crisis Management," "Motivation," "Test Taking," and "Time Management."
  2. improve the retention and graduation rates in Student Support Service college students.
  3. provide a support and information system.
  4. involve students on campus.
  5. increase students' awareness and use of campus resources.
  6. increase students' knowledge and sense of belonging to Alpena Community College.
  7. encourage student to student and student to faculty communication.
  8. provide support and information on career development and exploration.
  9. activate a support network for academic and personal needs.
