Alpena Community College Receives $1.9 Million Community-Based Job Training Grant

U.S. Department of Labor recently announced the awarding of a $1.9 million grant to Alpena Community College as part of President Bush's Community-Based Job Training Grants program. ACC's proposal, entitled - Concrete Opportunities and Solutions - will build upon established ACC academic programs at the World Center for Concrete Technology and expand educational opportunities for incumbent workers in the concrete industry.

The grant is for three years and will be used by ACC to provide four main services:

A major goal in the first year of the grant is to recruit 20 out-of-state students for enrollment in the existing Concrete Technology degree. To assist students in funding their education in a concrete degree, the Community-Based Job Training Grant will provide a limited number of tuition free scholarships to these out-of-state students on a first come first served basis. In order to accommodate these additional students the college will be hiring additional faculty along with a media technician.

The purpose of the Community-Based Job Training Grants program is to build community colleges- capacity to equip workers with the skills growing industries require for success. A total of 72 community college partnerships were awarded a share of $125 million; 429 entries were submitted in response to the competition, which was announced on July 3, 2006.
